Every third family in Germany has foreign roots, the country's Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reported in Wiesbaden on Tuesday.

According to 2013 results of the micro census, the largest annual household survey in Germany, more than 2.5 million of the approximately 8.1 million families with children who are minors come from immigrant backgrounds.

There are 131,000 more families with migrant backgrounds living in Germany than when the first survey was conducted in 2005, which shows a four percent increase to 31 percent.

In these families, at least one parent is a foreigner or has German citizenship obtained by naturalization, said the Federal Statistics Office.

However, Destatis said the total number of families in Germany has been decreasing for years.

As the figures showed, the number of families in Germany fell by 837,000 in the same period. Endit
