UNHCR chief calls for refugee quota system in EU

A mandatory quota system aimed at distributing refugees across the EU may be necessary, according to Antonio Guterres, head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

At a press conference in Stockholm on Tuesday, Guterres said that if EU member states fail to comply with the asylum system that the bloc has agreed on, then a mandatory quota system may need to be introduced.

Guterres praised Sweden's immigration policy and said that more countries "must act like Sweden and Germany".

"Sweden is one of the most important pillars in the protection of refugees and Sweden is also among those that contribute the most financially. Today, that support is more important than ever before," Guterres said.

In Stockholm, Guterres met with representatives of the Swedish government and parliament. Endit
