Australia's December deficit shrinks 57 percent

Xinhua, February 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

Australia's trade deficit shrank 57 percent in December to 436 million Australian dollars (334 million U.S. dollars), the Australian Bureau of Statistics announced Tuesday.

The result followed a deficit of 1.016 billion Australian dollars (780 million dollars) in November.

Over the December quarter, Australia's trade balance was 2.6 billion Australian dollars (2 billion dollars) in arrears, a 34 percent improvement on the previous three-month period.

The improved trade balance came from a 10 percent seasonally adjusted rise in rural exports, offsetting a 2 percent fall in other areas.

Coal exports also eased slightly in December. However, tourism related earnings were up 1 percent thanks to the falling Australian dollar. Endi
