Afghan security forces during cleanup operations in the northwest Faryab province have killed 14 Taliban militants over the past two days, while Taliban infiltrated elements' attack claimed four police lives in the southern Kandahar province on Monday, officials said.

In the latest violent incident, two Taliban loyalists penetrated into police rank opened fire and killed four police personnel in Taliban former stronghold, the southern Kandahar province on Monday, provincial government spokesman Samim Khapalwak said Monday.

"Two local policemen believed to be Taliban infiltrated elements opened fire on their colleagues inside a checkpoint in Koka Kariz area of Miwand district, Kandahar province in the wee hours of Monday, leaving four local police personnel dead," Khapalwak told reporters.

Investigation has been initiated into the case, the official said, adding that more details will be made public after completion of the investigation.

Meanwhile, Qari Yusuf Ahmadi who claimed to speak for the Taliban outfit in contact with media outlets, insisted that Taliban penetrated elements had conducted the attack, killing seven local police personnel.

Local police or community police are security personnel recruited by the government to ensure peace and stability in the far-flanged villages.
