Zambian leader appoints new chief judge

Xinhua, February 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

Zambian President Edgar Lungu has appointed a new head of the country's judiciary, his office said in a statement on Monday.

Lungu has appointed Justice Ireen Mambilima as the new chief justice to replace Justice Lombe Chibesakunda who has been acting since 2011, according to presidential spokesperson Amos Chanda.

The new chief judge, who has been deputy chief judge, was also seconded to the country's electoral body, the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and presided over the Jan. 20 presidential election won by Lungu.

The former chief judge has since been retired but she will continue acting in the position until the appointment of her successor is ratified by the Zambian parliament.

Lungu, who won last month's presidential election necessitated by the death of President Michael Sata last October, has begun working on creating his new government.

Last week, he appointed the country's first female vice- president, Inonge Wina. Endi
