Tunisia announces coalition cabinet involving Islamist party

Xinhua, February 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

he new Tunisian government is to to include the Islamist Party of Ennahdha, local media cited leader of Ennahdha Rached Ghannouchi as saying on Monday.

"Ennahdha will participate in the government and the future looks good," said Ghannouchi.

Prime Minister Designate Habib Essid has submitted the list of his nominated cabinet members to Essebsi on January 23. In his first list, Essid eliminated Ennahdha, the second majority at the Parliament with 69 seats.

Following Essid's announcement, Ennahdha stated on January 25 that they are to give a vote of non-confidence to Essid's new government.

Essid's former suggested cabinet consisted in members affiliated with Nidaa Tounes, the Free Patriotic Party (UPL) and politically independent members. This has raised concerns over having Essid's government rejected by members of the parliament.

However, according to various media reports, the new list is to include both Ennahdha and Afek Tounes in addition to Nidaa Tounes and the UPL.

Essid is to announce the new government on Monday. The cabinet will need 109 votes from the parliament in order to be approved. The vote of confidence is to take place on Wednesday. Endit
