Morsi faces new espionage charge on Feb. 15

Xinhua, February 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

Cairo Appeals Court set Feb. 15 to begin the trial of ousted president Mohamed Morsi on charges of leaking confidential documents to Qatar and Al-Jazeera television, official news agency MENA reported Monday.

The reports said other 10, including Morsi's presidential office head Ahmed Abdel Ati and secretary Amen el Serafy, are also among the defendants.

The state security prosecution said the documents leaked by them were from military intelligence agencies, the Armed Forces, National Security Agency of Interior Ministry and some other crucial national institutions.

Morsi, ousted by the army in July 2013, has already faced three other trials: inciting the killing of protesters, conspiring to destabilize Egypt and attacking police stations during a jailbreak in the 2011 uprising.

The trial against Morsi is part of the authority's crackdown on Muslim Brotherhood that has left hundreds dead and thousands jailed.

Qatar, where Al-Jazeera is based, has been a key backer of Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood, causing strains in its relation with Egypt. Endit
