Xinhua, February 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

China on Monday congratulated Sergio Mattarella on his election as the new president of Italy.

The 73-year-old constitutional judge won a majority vote at the parliament on Saturday. He will be sworn in on Tuesday.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said China-Italy relations are developing smoothly as the two sides maintain frequent high-level contact.

"China is ready to join in efforts with Italy and take the opportunity of the 45th anniversary of establishing diplomatic links to advance the all-round China-Italy strategic partnership for greater progress," Hong said.Endi
