Vietnam saw drop in malnutrition among kids under five years old nationwide in 2014, said the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) under Vietnam's Ministry of Health on Monday.

According to information released by NIN, the rate of Vietnamese kids in underweight malnutrition dropped from 15.3 percent in 2013 to 14.5 percent in 2014 while that of stunning malnutrition fell from 25.9 percent in 2013 to 24.9 percent in 2014.

The malnutrition rates varied on different ecological zones and regions in the country, said the NIN, adding that 22.6 percent of kids under five in the country's central highlands suffered from underweight malnutrition, while the figure in northern midlands and mountainous areas was 19.8 percent.

In provinces with good economic development, the rate of malnutrition of kids under five declined while the rate of obesity hiked in 2014, Vietnam's state-run news agency VNA quoted the institute as saying. Endi
