Lebanon files complaint against Israel's shelling at UN

Xinhua, January 31, 2015 Adjust font size:

Lebanon on Friday filed a complaint to the UN Security Council against Israel over its retaliatory shelling following Hezbollah's operation in the occupied Shebaa Farms.

Nawwaf Salam, Lebanon's envoy to the UN said Israel's shelling violated a UN resolution 1701, the National News Agency (NNA) reported.

According to the NNA, Lebanon urged in the complaint condemnation of Israel "in the strongest terms" over Wednesday's shelling against Lebanon.

The strikes were a "blatant" violation of its sovereignty, the UN Charter, the rules of the international law and the UN Security Council resolutions, especially Resolution 1701, said the report.

It also asked the UN Security Council to probe Israel's attacks against the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which left a Spanish peacekeeper dead, adding that Israel should be directly responsible for "this deplored act and its consequences."

The violence erupted on Wednesday when Hezbollah fired anti-tank missiles at an Israeli military convoy in the occupied Shebaa Farms, killing two soldiers and wounding seven.

Israel responded with shelling and a Spanish peacekeeper was killed in the exchange of fire.

Hezbollah said the operation was in response to an Israeli air raid on a Hezbollah convoy in Syria's Qoneitra earlier this month, which killed six Hezbollah fighters and a high ranking Iranian military officer.

Spain's ambassador to the UN also blamed Israel for the death of the Spaniard on Wednesday. The UN said the cause of death remains the subject of investigation. Endit
