Iran keen on Lebanon's stability: official

The visiting Chairman of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee in Iran's parliament Alaeddin Boroujerdi said Friday that Tehran was keen on Lebanon's stability, stressing that it was up to the Lebanese rival factions to resolve the presidential impasse.

"The latest political developments in the region help consolidate stability in Lebanon," the National News Agency quoted Bouroujerdi, following his meeting with Lebanon's Prime Minister Tammam Salam, as saying.

On the presidential deadlock, Bouroujerdi said "this is a Lebanese issue but we hope for a quick solution." The presidential seat has been vacant since former President Michel Suleiman's term ended on May 25.

About Israel's accusations that Tehran stood behind Hezbollah's deadly attack on an Israeli military convoy on Wednesday, Bouroujerdi said "Hezbollah is a major component of the political society in Lebanon and has MPs and ministers in the Lebanese government."

He said "like the rest of our ties with all of the Lebanese society's factions, we have close and strong relations with Hezbollah."

The violence erupted Wednesday when Hezbollah fired anti-tank missiles at an Israeli military convoy in the occupied Shebaa Farms, killing two soldiers and wounding seven.

It led Israel to respond with shelling south Lebanon and the killing of a Spanish peacekeeper with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Endit
