Belarus relies on China's support for export diversification: president

Xinhua, January 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said Thursday that he relies on China's support for export diversification.

"Belarus would like to compete with the West in being the leading exporter to China. If the sale of Belarusian goods reaches 5 billion U.S. dollars - that would be the ultimate dream," Lukashenko told a press conference here in Minsk.

Export diversification is very important for Belarus, said the president, adding that the Belarusian government was tasked "to ask our friends in China to purchase goods from us at a fixed price and quantity."

Lukashenko also stressed the importance of carrying out the Industrial Park Great Stone, a bilateral project which could bring "billions in revenues".

"If we implement this project, there will be no problems either with the gold reserve, or with supporting the national currency rate," he said.

Lukashenko thanked the Chinese side for aiding and supporting Belarus at a difficult time. The China-Belarus Industrial Park is being constructed in Smolevichi district, Minsk region. The whole project is estimated to take up to 30 billion U.S. dollars' worth of investment in the long term.

Minsk regards China as its strategic partner in Asia. It has expressed willingness to become a "stronghold" of China in Europe. Endite
