Latvian President Andris Berzins will not attend this year's May 9 festivities in Moscow marking the anniversary of the Soviet victory in World War II, according to an announcement posted on the president's official website.

The president's spokeswoman Liga Krapane said that the decision was taken considering EU foreign minister's discussion at their Jan. 19 meeting and the latest escalation in eastern Ukraine where innocent civilians are suffering and being killed amid fresh hostilities.
