Roundup: Afghan conflicts claim 29 lives in 24 hours

Xinhua, January 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

Afghan militancy and counter- militancy have claimed 29 lives including seven soldiers of Afghan national army across the conflict-ridden country over the past 24 hours, security entities confirmed Tuesday. "As a result of enemies'heavy weapons firing seven Afghan National Army (ANA), personnel were martyred over the past 24 hours,"the Defense Ministry said in a statement released here.

In counter-attacks, the national army have waged offensives and killed 15 militants in Paktika, Helmand, Kandahar, Herat and Nimroz provinces besides recovering weapons and drugs in the same period, the statement added. "During the raids, several militants were wounded, six others were detained and the ANA personnel also recovered 82 kg heroin, 13 bags of opium and also have defused 51 roadside bombs and landmines,"the statement said.

Moreover, units of Afghan national police during series of operations across the country have killed seven armed Taliban fighters and captured over a dozen others since early Monday, Interior Ministry said in a statement released here Tuesday. "Seven armed Taliban members have been killed and 14 others arrested during series of operations conducted by police in Kandahar, Zabul, Uruzgan, Logar, Khost, Patkia and Helmand provinces over the past 24 hours,"the statement said.

The statement didn't say if there were casualties on the side of security personnel. Police and army, in many cases, engage separately with the anti-government militants.

Taliban militants, however, on their website claimed killing over two dozen security personnel across the country over the past two days.

Since assuming security charge by Afghan national security forces from Jan. 1 this year, the Taliban-led insurgency has intensified. Endi
