U.S. remains biggest importer of Vietnamese seafood in 2014

The United States remained the biggest importer of Vietnamese seafood in 2014 with over 1.709 billion U.S. dollars, accounting for some 21.8 percent of the market share.

According to Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on Tuesday, export revenue of Vietnamese seafood to the market in 2014 posted an increase of 17.3 percent year-on-year.

Vietnamese seafood exports to Japan, South Korea and China in 2014 also witnessed year-on-year increase of 7.5 percent, 27.8 percent and 11.4 percent, respectively.

In 2014, Vietnam's total seafood export value reached over 7. 836 billion U.S. dollars, far exceeding the set target of 7 billion U.S. dollars.

During the year, the country's seafood production reached 6.311 million tons, an increase of 4.8 percent year-on-year, of which exploitation brought some 2.918 tons of seafood, while aquaculture yielded around 3.393 million tons, according to the ministry.

In the first month of 2015, Vietnam's seafood production is expected to stay at 409,000 tons, up 2.3 percent year-on-year.

Seafood is among major income earners and one of Vietnam's major export commodities. Vietnam has been among the biggest seafood exporters in the world.

In 2015, Vietnam targets to earn some 8.5 billion U.S. dollars from seafood exports. Endi
