Xinhua, January 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

Benfica was defeated 1-0 by Pacos de Ferreira on Monday night in the 18th round of the Portuguese league at the Capital stadium in north Portugal.

Pacos de Ferreira midfielder Sergio Oliveira scored in the 90th minute with a penalty kick, after Benfica midfielder Eliseu was shown a yellow card for a foul over Peruvian forward Cristopher Hurtado.

Benfica was close to scoring in the 18th minute through a penalty kick but Brazilian forward Lima wasted his chance as the ball hit a post.

From then on several chances were created for the home team, but they were diligently saved by Benfica's goalkeeper Julio Cesar.

Pacos de Ferreira defender Ricardo Silva almost scored in the 30th but his header went over the bar.

Benfica suffered its second defeat this season and failed to extend its advantage at the top of the Portuguese league, where it sits with 46 points, 6 more than Porto.

On Sunday, Porto's title hopes were shattered when it was defeated 1-0 by Maritimo. Benfica was hoping Monday's night to gain a 9-point advantage.

Pacos de Ferreira now stands 7th in the Portuguese league with 26 points. Endi
