Casualties were feared Monday as suspected Boko Haram fighters went on rampage in Michika Town in Nigeria's northeastern state of Adamawa, killing residents and burning down buildings, local security sources and witnesses said.

Attackers stormed the area with sophisticated weapons and began to shoot indiscriminately at residents, a Nigerian military personnel, who pleaded for anonymity, said.

According to the security source, government forces were quickly deployed to contain the carnage and cordon off the area.

But a source, identified as a youth leader in the area, said casualties figure might be high because the attackers had wreaked havoc in the area before the arrival of security operatives. Endi
