Oil spill in Gothenburg harbour

Xinhua, January 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

The harbour of Gothenburg in western Sweden experienced an oil spill late Sunday night.

"It pushed in towards the land," Lasse Hellstrom of the local emergency rescue services said of the oil slick. He was speaking to Swedish news agency TT.

Both emergency rescue services and the coast guard attended to the situation late Sunday. An agency responsible for protecting the environment and health was also involved and police are investigating the cause of the spillage, local media reported.

Overnight, harbor personnel were able to take over responsibility for draining and sanitizing the spillage and the situation was under control by Monday morning.

"It's a spillage of diesel or something diesel-like. It's between 20 and 150 litres so in our estimation it is not a very large-scale spillage," Cecilia Karlsson, head of communications at the Gothenburg harbor, told local newspaper GT.

Gothenburg is Sweden's second largest city and is located on the country's west coast. Enditem
