IMF chief in Rwanda to bolster ties

Xinhua, January 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director, Christine Lagarde, arrived in Rwanda on Sunday for a three-day visit to bolster her institution's ties with the Central African nation.

Legarde was received by the country's Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Claver Gatete. She is expected to hold meetings with the Rwandan government policy makers regarding boosting Rwanda's economic growth.

Speaking to local journalists on Monday, Gatete said that, Lagarde's visit is paramount because IMF could assess Rwanda's economic strategic policies that have managed to rebuild and improve the welfare of all Rwandans for two decades after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

"We are glad to receive her in Rwanda. IMF and our country have a very close economic policy dialogue. IMF is currently supporting us with a Policy Support Instrument (PSI) which is designed for low-income countries," he said.

Rwanda over the past 20 years has seen tangible progress in achieving high levels of growth and poverty reduction.

According to IMF preliminary basis, Rwanda's economic growth rate is estimated to be 7.5 percent in 2015.

Rwanda was ranked as the most competitive economy in the region by the World Bank Economic Forum report in 2014. Endi
