Singapore arrests less drug abusers in 2014

Xinhua, January 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

Singapore has arrested 3,085 drug abusers in 2014, a decrease of 14 percent from 2013, the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) said in a press release on Monday.

Among the drug abusers arrested in 2014, 1,058 were new offenders, a 5 percent drop from 2013, CNB said, adding that about two-thirds of the new drug abusers were below 30 years of age.

Heroin and methamphetamine remained the two most commonly abused drugs, with about 92 percent of all drug abusers arrested having abused one or the other, CNB said.

The drugs seized in 2014 were estimated to be worth 8.14 million Singapore dollars (6.17 million U.S. dollars), 60 percent lower than the previous year. However, CNB pointed out that cannabis seizures have increased by about 125 percent to 35 kilograms.

CNB said it will continue to conduct preventive drug education to students and the general public, adding that it has increased outreach to youths through various platforms to remind youths to stay away from drugs. Endi
