Interview: Grenada expects to deepen cooperation with China: PM

Xinhua, January 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

Grenada's Prime Minister Keith Mitchell told Xinhua Wednesday that his country expects to deepen its ties with China.

China and Grenada celebrated Tuesday the tenth anniversary of their resumption of diplomatic ties.

Recalling how he initiated the resumption of ties with China ten years ago, Mitchell said he felt a special sense of pride about the decision.

China and Grenada established diplomatic relations in 1985 and severed ties in 1989 over the issue of Taiwan. The two reestablished ties on Jan. 20, 2005.

Mitchell said that during the past decade, the relations between the two countries have progressed to the extent that seeds of the collective efforts have already begun to blossom and bear fruits.

"I am convinced that the decision was the correct one for Grenada. We are heartened by the fact that Grenada had certainly benefited tremendously from this relationship in many areas," he said.

Mitchell hope that with mutual respect and through continued dialogue and cooperation, the relationship between China and Grenada will continue to strengthen and grow over the years to come. The prime minister also applaud China's commitment to engaging regional cooperation mechanisms aimed at advancing the developmental needs.

On the First China-CELAC Forum recently concluded in Beijing, Mitchell said this strategic alliance brings together a significant amount of human, natural and financial resources for the benefit of the Caribbean region. "This is a ground breaking alliance that has tremendous potential. I expect that China will deepen the cooperation with Grenada and also the Caribbean as a whole," he said. Endite
