Jordan, Shell sign natural gas agreement

Xinhua, January 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

Jordan signed an agreement Wednesday with Royal Dutch Shell to start to supply the Kingdom with liquefied natural gas (LNG) in July.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Mohammad Hamed said Shell will provide Jordan with 150 million cubic of liquefied natural gas per day.

Under the five-year agreement, Jordan will pay some 500 million U.S. dollars per year based on the current gas prices, he said at a press conference Wednesday.

The quantities Shell will supply each day cover some 25 percent of the power company's daily needs for power generation, he added.

Jordan, which imports about 97 percent of its energy needs annually, seeks to diversify its energy sources following several cuts in natural gas supplies from Egypt, which forced the country to buy heavy fuel and diesel for power generation. Endit
