EU discusses adoption of five-year internal security strategy

The European Union (EU) is preparing a five-year internal security strategy which may be adopted within months to combat terrorism, a senior EU official said on Wednesday.

The European Commission said in a statement the College of Commissioners held a first exchange of views on the future European Agenda on Security during its weekly meeting.

"We are preparing an internal security strategy which we hope to present in May but we are obviously also involved in preparing the European Council in February discussing current affairs," Frans Timmermans, first vice-president of the EC said in a midday press conference.

The statement said the European Commission would adopt a European Agenda on Security for 2015 to 2020 in the coming months which would address several aspects such as identifying policy tools to prevent and address radicalization; stepping up the fight against terrorism financing; strengthening cooperation between Europe and other European agencies; and reinforcing the fight against arms trafficking.

"We have discussed this issue in a way that engages all commissioners because everybody sees within their limit a role we can play to combat terrorism and to create better conditions in our society for accommodating the position of all communities in European society," Timmermans added. Endit
