Editor's note: Substitute teacher Li Xuemei has spent four years in a rural elementary school in Shipai Village, Sichuan Province. Born in the 1990s, Li has fulfilled her responsibility to stay with 36 village children who cannot receive an education elsewhere. During her four-year tenure she has never abandoned the children, not even during her troubling pregnancy.
