3rd LD: At least 2 killed in Russian mine explosion

Xinhua, January 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least two people died in an explosion at the Yuahnaya iron ore mine in Russia's Sverdlovsk region early Saturday, TASS reported.

One of the two miners buried in the mine was found dead, after one body was found earlier.

"During search and rescue work, another body was recovered while nothing is known about the other miner," local police said.

Two injured miners have been sent to the central hospital of the city of Kushva, and they are in moderately severe condition.

As many as 89 miners were working in the mine when the explosion occurred, and 86 of them have been evacuated, local police spokesman Valery Gorelykh said.

A criminal case has been opened following the explosion, said Alexander Shulga of the regional department of the Investigative Committee.

The accident might be caused by fire due to a breach of safety regulations in the Yuahnaya mine, and then the fire set off an explosion of quarry powder, according to local police.

"We believe the explosion substance was quarry powder. There is information that a miner received earlier 12 kilograms of the explosive," said the local authorities' press service.

The fire was put out at 12:00 Moscow time (0900 GMT). Experts are clearing the air at the site now, and the rescue work is still under way. Endi
