Spanish PM asks for unity against jihadist threat

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Saturday asked for unity in the face of jihadist terrorism.

Speaking at the closure of the Security and Liberty Forum, organized by his ruling Popular Party, Rajoy defended his government's plans for a new National Security law, which opposition groups have criticized because they claim it will infringe civil liberties and limit rights to protest.

Rajoy said the law was "a capital law for the current times," adding it would help define the "risks and threats" facing Spain and would leave his country as one "of the best equipped countries in the World" to face terrorism.

"We cannot afford to give any quarter to terrorism in any of its forms," said Rajoy, who asked for "unity against violent people, unity against criminals and unity against inhumanity."

Rajoy also said that the ultimate aim of jihadist terrorists was "the destruction and the death of our civilization."

The Spanish Prime Minister has called a meeting of the National Security Council for next Friday ahead of the weekly cabinet meeting. The Security Council has the function of elaborating strategies for possible threats to security. Endit
