Russia allows Ukrainian refugees to work freely: official

Xinhua, January 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

Ukrainian citizens who have applied for refugee status in Russia may work in the country, Russian immigration authorities said.

"Those who came to us in emergency and applied for the status of temporary shelter may be working without whatever permission. We shall offer our assistance during their stay in the Russian Federation," Russian Federal Migration Service head Konstantin Romodanovsky said in a local TV interview on Saturday.

According to Russian migration authorities, the number of forced Ukrainian migrants in Russia now stands at 850,000. Russia's official statistics in December 2014 shows about 233,000 Ukrainians have applied for refugee status or temporary shelter in Russia.

"The migration rules for those who were forced to leave southeastern Ukraine and came to Russia seeking refugee status or temporary shelter will remain unchanged," spokesperson for the migration authority Zalina Kornilova said earlier.

Other Ukrainian citizens will have to undergo the procedures necessary for those from any other member of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Endi
