1st Ld-Writethru: Former Nanjing mayor stands trial for taking bribes

Ji Jianye, former mayor of Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, stood trial on Friday morning for taking bribes worth 1.82 million U.S. dollars.
He was tried at the Yantai Intermediate People's Court in Shandong Province.
According to the indictment, Ji took advantage of his posts and provided favors to seven companies and individuals, including Xu Dongming from Jinlian trade company in Suzhou, from 1992 to 2013 while working as an official in the cities of Suzhou, Kunshan, Yangzhou and Nanjing in Jiangsu Province.
Ji is accused of helping them in project bids and development as well as job transfers. Ji allegedly helped Jinlian trade company secure bids for projects through his position as municipal Communist Party of China chief of Yangzhou.
From the end of 1999 to October 2012, Ji accepted bribes worth over 11.32 million yuan (1.82 million U.S. dollars) from these companies and individuals, directly or through middle men, the indictment said.
More than 90 people attended the trial, including national and local lawmakers, political advisors, Ji's relatives, and reporters. The verdict will be announced on a future date. Endi
