Xinhua summary of Asia-Pacific stocks news at 1100GMT, Jan. 16

Tokyo stocks plunged 1.43 percent Friday after the Swiss National Bank unexpectedly removed its currency cap against the euro, which led to the yen's sharply rise.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average slipped 244.54 points, from Thursday at 16,864.16. The index fell as much as 3 percent to 16, 592.57 during the day.

The turnover was 2,714.3 billion yen (about 23.31 billion U.S. dollars).

BEIJING -- Chinese shares closed higher Friday with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index ending at 3,376.49 points, up 1. 20 percent.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed at 11,532.80 points, up 0. 43 percent.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed down 247.39 points, or 1. 02 percent to 24,103.52 points on Friday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 24,086.21 and 24, 253.09. Turnover totaled 94.92 billion HK dollars (about 12.23 billion U.S. dollars).

VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market finished on Friday down 0.11 percent against the previous trading day.

The Lao Securities Exchange composite index decreased by 1.52 points to 1,412.47. A total of 18,732 shares worth about 80 million Lao kip (about 10,000 U.S. dollars) changed hands at the stock market.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended lower on Friday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) dropped 26.01 points, or 1.36 percent, to 1,888.13 at the close. Trading volume stood at 294.64 million shares worth 3.92 trillion won (3. 64 billion U.S. dollars).

HONG KONG -- Taiwan's share prices closed down 0.29 percent on Friday with the weighted index down 26.80 points at 9,138.29, according to news reaching here from Taipei.

Turnover totaled 113.96 billion new Taiwan dollars (about 3.61 billion U.S. dollars) during the trading session.

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City bourse in south Vietnam, closed at 574.81 points on Friday, down 2.93 points, or 0.51 percent, against the previous trading day's closing session.

About 106.677 million shares worth 1.728 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (80.53 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the southern HCM City Stock Exchange.

VN30-Index, the new benchmark index for the southern bourse, which tracks the 30 leading stocks by both market capitalization and liquidity, closed at 614.72 points, down 2.9 points, or 0.47 percent.

A total of 46.384 million shares worth 814.73 billion VND (37. 96 million U.S. dollars) were traded on Friday.

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX- Index, closed at 85.35 points on Friday, down 0.53 points, or 0.62 percent, against the previous trading session.

A total of 58.669 million shares worth 726.426 billion Vietnamese dong (34.43 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Friday, a decrease of 13.16 percent in volume and 24.87 percent in value against the previous trading session.

JAKARTA -- Indonesian shares closed lower by 40.33 points, or 0. 78 percent, to 5,148.38 points on Friday.

Some 246,477 transactions were booked, involving 5.32 billion shares worth 5.67 trillion rupiah (about 450.33 million U.S. dollars).

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks finished lower on Friday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) down 38.16 points, or 1.14 percent, to close at 3,300.68.

A total of 1.77 billion shares changed hands with turnover of 1. 39 billion Singapore dollars (1.06 billion U.S. dollars).

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended lower here on Friday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,743.57 down 1. 43 points or 0.08 percent, and the Emas was at 12,001.81 down 14. 66 points or 0.12 percent.

Turnover declined to 1.79 billion shares valued at 1.88 billion ringgit Malaysia (527.94 million U.S. dollars), compared with 1.93 billion shares valued at 2.30 billion ringgit Malaysia (645.70 million U.S. dollars) on Thursday.

COLOMBO -- Sri Lanka's Colombo stock exchange continued its downward trend falling by 35.99 points, 0.48 percent, to close at 7,513.86 on Friday. Trading volume stood at 26.2 million shares worth 997.2 million rupees (about 7.7 million U.S. dollars).

BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index Friday moved down 5.64 points, or 0.37 percent to close at 1,517.74 points.
