Xinhua, January 16, 2015 Adjust font size:

Eight people were confirmed dead after a boat capsized in Central African Republic (CAR) on Wednesday in Ubangi River, 17 kilometers away from the capital Bangui, CAR Red Cross President Antoine Mbao Bogo said on Friday.

Bogo told Xinhua by phone the accident was caused by fire in the motor, and there were more than 100 people on board.

According to Bogo, the accident happened near Modale town where the passenger boat left for Kouango, a town bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo, but the cause of the fire is not yet determined.

Bogo said most passengers on the boat were Centra Africans and there were also some Congolese.

CAR Red Cross has sent a rescue team to the site. Endi
