At the time when the residents in the Kenema district in the eastern region of Sierra Leone about 300 kilometers from the capital, Freetown, were reporting zero Ebola cases for almost thirty days, the Sierra Leone Red Cross issued a press statement Thursday that one of its staff members died of Ebola.
According to the press statement, the staff member who was a male nurse working at the IFRC Ebola treatment center in Kenema passed away on Tuesday and was confirmed positive of the Ebola virus disease that very day.
The press statement pointed out that the center was run by 144 local staff and 19 international staff since the treatment center opened in September 2014.
A source from the Red Cross in Kenema told Xinhua by telephone that this is the first case of death of a red cross volunteer or staff member since response operations were launched in April 2014.
Since the center was launched they have cared for more than 500 patients. As a result all those suspected to have had contact with him such as family members as well as co-workers all in Kenema have been swiftly quarantined. Endi
