AU congratulates Tunisia on peaceful, successful presidential election

Xinhua, January 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, has congratulated Tunisia on holding peaceful and successful presidential election, said AU in a statement on Thursday.

The chairperson also congratulated the election of Beji Caid Essebsi as the new President of the Republic of Tunisia after the 2010 revolution, said the statement.

Zuma said the successful election was a reflection of Tunisia's untiring commitment to establish a strong democratic state, and a clear indication that it is possible to rebuild democratic structures after a revolution.

While endorsing the preliminary recommendations of the AU Election Observation Mission and encouraging the government of Tunisia to implement them for the advancement of democratic and participatory governance, the Chairperson reiterated AU's commitment to supporting the government and people of Tunisia.

She urged the new government to speedily begin to advance the economy and general welfare of the Tunisian people. Endi
