Vietnam treats breast cancer via first-ever hematopoietic stem cell transplantation

A hospital in Vietnam's central Nghe An province has successfully cured breast cancer through hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for the first time in the country, authorities said on Thursday.

The local authority said on the website that two patients with breast cancer were discharged from hospital in good health condition after being treated at the Nghe An Oncology Hospital.

Nguyen Trung Chinh, member of the Vietnam Cancer Association said that to cope with the increasing number of cancer patients, the country has been actively in finding treatment methods for the disease.

Among the methods, treatment through hematopoietic stem cell transplantation targeting the root cause of the cancer is a new trend in the world and in Vietnam, Chinh said.

The success of Nghe An Oncology Hospital is of great significance as it brings opportunities to patients with breast cancer, an official said.

Statistics from the Cancer Prevention Institution of Vietnam showed that each year, Vietnam reports around 11,000 new cases of breast cancer. Endi
