New UN envoy pledges to consolidate role in Ghana's development

Xinhua, January 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

The new UN Resident Coordinator to Ghana, Christine Evans-Klock, has pledged to work hard in supporting the development aspirations of the government and people of Ghana.

The new envoy said this when he paid a courtesy call on Ghana's minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hanna Serwaah Tetteh, on Monday, according to a release from the UN Ghana office.

Evans-Klock, who is also the new Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programs (UNDP), was recently appointed to replace Ruby Sandhu-Rojon who served as UN Resident Coordinator until March 2014.

"I look forward to consolidating the role of the UN system as a key government partner in achieving development goals," Evans- Klock added.

The new envoy expressed great delight at the opportunity to join her colleagues already working in Ghana to support the country's development aspirations.

The release added that Evans-Klock also held discussions with Ghana's foreign minister over the Ebola Viral Disease, its devastating impact on the epicenter countries, regional implications and global response to the crisis.

They also touched on early recovery assessments being undertaken by the UN, World Bank, European Union (EU), African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in close collaboration with governments of the three most affected countries – Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

"The discussion also touched on dialogue on the Sustainable Development Goals, which succeeds the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)," the release added.

Tetteh pledged the support of the government of Ghana for the new envoy to deliver on her mandate.

Evans-Klock is an American and a labor market economist who had previously served with the International Labor Organization (ILO).

She has also served with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) as an Assistant Industrial Development Officer and with the World Health Organization as a Technical Officer.

The new envoy was accompanied by Susan Ngongi, who acted as UN Resident Coordinator from March 2014, and Dominic Sam, UNDP Country Director. Endi
