Former Portuguese secretary of state jailed for maladministration

Xinhua, January 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

Former secretary of state and leader of the center-right Social Democratic Party Paulo Julio was sentenced to 26 months in prison on Wednesday.

Julio was imprisoned on charges of maladministration during a bidding procedure for a leading position in the city of Penela, in northern Portugal, when he was the mayor of Penela between 2008 and 2011.

The court said it was proved that Julio intended to assist candidate Mario Duarte, a distant cousin and senior technician of Penela's city hall, to lead the department of culture, sport, tourism and youth.

The judge also said he had ruled out any candidates, according to local media.

Julio was secretary of state for Portugal's Social Democrat government from 2011 to 2013.

He resigned in 2013 when the Public Prosecutor accused him of maladministration of a contract to hire a senior municipal official when he was the mayor of Penela, in the district of Coimbra, 150 kilometers north of Lisbon, in 2008. Endi
