Dakar Rally: Biker Barreda ends losing streak to win stage 10

Xinhua, January 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

Spanish speedster Joan Barreda Bort (Honda) won stage 10 of the 2015 Dakar Rally Wednesday, in the motorbike division.

Described by organizers as "possibly the most talented rider in the field," Barreda ended a streak of bad luck -- that early on dashed his hopes of winning the rally -- to steal the stage from the overall leader, fellow Spaniard Marc Coma (KTM).

Barreda set "an infernal pace" throughout the day to finish 1 minute and 39 seconds ahead of Coma, who still leads in the general standings.

Barreda completed the 371-km route between the Chilean town of Calama and Salta, Argentina, in 4h07m11s. Portugal's Ruben Faria (KTM) came in third.

For Coma, it was still a victory, since the race put even more distance between him and his closest rivals. With just three more days to go before the rally's big finish, he heads the list of riders with a total of 38h13m50s, trailed by Portugal's Paulo Goncalves (Honda) by 7m35s, Chile's Pablo Quintanilla (KTM) by 31m42s, Australia's Toby Price (KTM) by 32m06s and Slovakia's Stefan Svitko (KTM) by 45m19s.

On Thursday, stage 11 of the race will continue to test competitors' endurance with a fourth day of marathon riding (no outside assistance) over a route from Salta to Termas de Rio Hondo, in Argentina's Santiago del Estero province. Endi
