2nd LD Writethru: General Ravelonarivo Jean appointed Madagascar's PM

Xinhua, January 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

Ravelonarivo Jean, a Navy general, was appointed Madagascar's prime minister, the general secretary of the presidency Ralala Roger said late Wednesday, two days after the resignation of Kolo Roger and his government.

Jean was appointed following article 54 of Madagascar's Constitution stipulating "the Prime minister is appointed by the president of Republic in a list proposed by political party having the majority in the parliament," Ralala Roger said in reading a presidential decree.

Former ministers will ensure daily tasks of the government until the appointment of new government members, he added.

Kolo Roger, who was appointed in April 2014, tendered his resignation to President Hery Rajaonarimampianina Monday night. On Tuesday, parliament members proposed a list of 14 potential names for prime minister.

Jean was president of the association Rotary club in the large Indian Ocean island before his appointment. He was also general director of the company SEIMAD, which built houses for public servants during the regime of former President Didier Ratsiraka. Endite
