Tokyo stocks plunge 1.71 pct on tumbling oil prices, firmer yen

Tokyo stocks fell 1.71 percent on Wednesday, dragged down by tumbling crude oil prices and a firmer yen.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average declined 291.75 points, from Tuesday at 16,795.96, its lowest close in nearly a month.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 16.71 points, or 1.22 percent, lower at 1,357.98.

Major decliners included nonferrous metal, energy and steel issues.

The turnover was 2,287.5 billion yen (about 19.51 billion U.S. dollars). Endi
