One suicide bomber has been killed and 17 suspects detained after Afghan security forces launched an operation in Afghan capital of Kabul, police said Wednesday morning.
"On a confirmed tip-off, the Afghan National Police (ANP) carried an operation in Bagrami District in (eastern) Kabul at around 7:00 p.m. (local time) Tuesday. Upon arrival of security forces at the targeted house, one suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest, killing himself on the spot. As a result of the raid, the ANP found numerous suicide jackets and detained 17 suspects," the Kabul police said in a statement.
Lieutenant General Abdul Rahman Rahimi, Kabul police chief, was leading the operation which was launched in coordination with the Afghan National Directorate for Security (NDS), the country's intelligence agency, according to the statement.
"The timely arrest of the targeted group has foiled a major terror attack and has saved the city from an expected disaster," it noted.
No casualty took place among the security force members, the statement added.
Further details about the suspects remained unknown.
The Taliban insurgent group has intensified attacks over the past couple of months as the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) assumed the full security charges from NATO-led troops earlier this month.
On Tuesday, two civilians were killed and two others wounded in a bomb attack in southwestern Kabul. Endi
