Marking the fifth anniversary of a devastating earthquake in Haiti, UN Secretary- General Ban Ki-moon urged the international community to continue its support for the country's recovery, UN deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq told a briefing on Monday.
"Haiti's recovery has not been easy," said Ban. "There have been -- and continue to be -- setbacks along the way, and there is much work still to be done to ensure political and institutional stability, democratic governance and sustainable development."
On Jan. 12, 2010, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 rocked Haiti, killing more than 200,000 people, including 102 UN staff, and leaving 1.5 million others homeless. The massive quake also caused widespread destruction and a major humanitarian crisis across the country.
At present, Haiti is still grappling with the major challenge of a protracted political crisis which continued throughout last year and led to weak governance of the country. According to the UN World Food Program, five years after the quake, some 3 million Haitians remain unsure where their next meal will come from. Endite
