Defender Jeno Buzanszky, the last member of Hungary' s Golden Team that dominated world soccer through the first half of the 1950s, died on Sunday at the age of 89, Hungarian website FourFourTwo.hu reported.

Buzanszky was hospitalized on December 12 and was reported in critical condition after undergoing repeated surgeries. His son announced his father' s demise on Sunday evening.

Buzanszky played right back on the 1952 Olympic gold medalist team and in the match dubbed "The Game of the Century," in 1953 when Hungary beat England 6-3 at Wembley Stadium. He was also on the team that lost the 1954 world championship finals to West Germany, bringing the team' s 5-year winning streak to a screeching halt.

Buzanszky had been the last surviving member of the team following the death of star striker Ferenc Puskas in 2006 and goalkeeper Gyula Grosics in June of 2014. In all, Buzanszky had played 49 games for Hungary' s national team.

His home team was the Dorog Miners, for which he began playing in 1947, and started coaching in 1960. He quit the Dorog team in 1965 but returned two years later. From 1972 to 1985 he was Dorog' s technical manager. The Dorog stadium was re-named in his honor in 2010.

Buzanszky' s became a member of the presidium of the Hungarian Football Federation in 1993.

Buzanszky was predeceased by his wife, Lenke, who died three years ago. Endi
