Cuba expects sugar output growth

Cuba's sugarcane harvest has yielded favorable results in the first two months of 2014-2015 harvest season, poised to meet the 15-20 percent output growth target set against the previous season, said an industry group report.
Recent data show that the country has produced more than 24,000 tons of sugar above the planned figures, a number equivalent to 290,000 tons of raw material, said the report released bythe state-owned entrepreneurial group AZCUBA. .
Local experts highlighted that meeting the desired 20 percent production growth involves working effectively with scheduled factories and maintaining high efficiency throughout the campaign.
The sugar sector failed to attained its goal of production last harvests' season due to rains and warm temperatures, according to AZCUBA's data.
To achieve the expected harvest target, 147,000 hectares of sugarcane were planted in the season, 25,000 hectares more than the average of the last three years, said the report, and AZCUBA expects to plant 168,000 hectares to maintain a higher annual growth.
Cuba has taken a series of measures to increase the production of sugar, the economic engine for the Caribbean country, including replacing old machines with new ones, diversifying sugar-related products, and attracting foreign investment. Endi
