One worker was killed and four others were trapped in an avalanche in northern Turkey on Saturday, private Dogan news agency reported.

The avalanche took place in a construction site of a hydroelectric plant in Caykara town of Trabzon province, the report said, adding that the rescue operation has been launched.

The heavy snow and cold weather has hit various parts of Turkey since Monday, affecting schools and transportation across the country.

Schools in many provinces and 1,788 village roads in the eastern region of the country were closed due to the freezing weather and heavy snowfall. Endit
