Ghana condemns terrorist attack in France

The Ghanaian government has described Wednesday's terrorist attack in Paris that claimed 12 lives as senseless and an attack on democratic values.

Speaking at the 83rd annual congress of the Ahmadiyya Muslim mission in Ghana's central region, President John Dramani Mahama said there was no justification for religious violence, adding that the peaceful religious coexistence in Ghana should not be taken for granted.

"Terrorist action led to the condemnable loss in Paris..we see brutal killings and beheadings posted on the Internet, are we reading the same holy books or interpreting them differently?" the President queried.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration in Accra also condemned the attack.

"We learned that eight out of the persons murdered were journalists and other two being policemen. We are appalled at the senseless killing of these individuals, and the terror and cruelty unleashed on the unsuspecting public," said the statement.

"We regard this as an attack on our common values of democracy, peaceful coexistence and the freedom of speech, and stand in solidarity with the people of France at this difficult time," the statement added.

The statement expressed Ghana's heartfelt condolences to the government and people of France and especially to the families of the deceased persons.
