China-based striker left out of Zambian team

Xinhua, January 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

Zambia coach Honor Janza has announced his final 23-man squad ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations without veteran striker James Chamanga, the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) announced on Wednesday.

The 36-year-old China-based striker, whose inclusion in the provisional 27-man squad raised eyebrows due to his inconsistence in scoring for the national team, was left out of the final team alongside three local based players, FAZ said on its website.

The sacked local players are defenders Bronson Chama and Aaron Katebe and goalkeeper Toaster Nsabata.

The Zambian coach said players were selected based on their performance during training, adding that the training camp in South Africa has been competitive as each player was trying to prove their worthy in the final team.

The coach has instead decided to include three players from the under-20 team and said it was important to introduce young players to top international competitions.

The Chipolopolo are in Group B alongside Cape Verde, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tunisia at Africa's soccer showpiece which kicks off on Jan. 17 in Equatorial Guinea. Endi
