China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index on the Shanghai Stock Exchange closed at 3,293.46 points on Thursday, down 2.39 percent.

Total turnover: 399.23 billion yuan (65.13 billion U.S. dollars) .

BEIJING -- The Shenzhen Component Index on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange closed at 11,465.14 points on Thursday, down 1.28 percent.

Total turnover: 238.97 billion yuan (38.98 billion U.S. dollars) .

SYDNEY -- Australian stocks closed 0.5 percent higher on Thursday even though falling energy shares weighed heavily on the market.

At the market close, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was 27.9 points, or 0.52 percent, higher at 5,381.5, while the broader All Ordinaries index was up 24.9 points, or 0.47 percent, at 5,359.4.

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks rose 1.67 percent Thursday as market sentiment was lifted by upbeat U.S. job data.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 281.77 points from Wednesday to 17167.10, the biggest gain since Dec. 19.

The turnover was 2,200.4 billion yen (about 18.51 billion U.S. dollars).

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended higher on Thursday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) jumped 20.82 points, or 1.11 percent, to 1,904.65 at the close. Trading volume stood at 258.49 million shares worth 4.17 trillion won (3.8 billion U.S. dollars).

HONG KONG -- Taiwan's share prices closed up 1.73 percent on Thursday with the weighted index up 157.94 points at 9,238.03, according to news reaching here from Taipei.

Turnover totaled 107.30 billion new Taiwan dollars (about 3.35 billion U.S. dollars) during the trading session.

VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market finished on Thursday up 0.44 percent against the previous trading day.

The Lao Securities Exchange composite index increased by 6.14 points to 1,405.37. A total of 153,084 shares worth about 1 billion Lao kip (about 122,000 U.S. dollars) changed hands.

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 0.79 percent higher on Thursday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index increased by 57. 93 points to 7367.63. The all-share index went up by 19.27 points, or 0.45 percent, to 4321.89.

Trading volume reached 2.38 billion shares worth 11.14 billion pesos (247.38 million U.S. dollars).

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh City bourse in south Vietnam, closed at 553.47 points on Thursday, up 1.42 points, or 0.26 percent, against the previous trading day's closing session.

About 77.867 million shares worth 1.406 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (65.53 million U.S. dollars) changed hands. Prices of 80 stocks went up, 128 stocks fell down, while 65 stocks remained unchanged.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed up 154.27 points, or 0.65 percent, to 23,835.53 points on Thursday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 23,719.05 and 23, 941.64. Turnover totaled 101.94 billion HK dollars (about 13.15 billion U.S. dollars).

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX- Index, closed at 84.1 points on Thursday, down 0.08 points, or 0.1 percent, against the previous trading session.

A total of over 43.685 million shares worth 589.57 billion Vietnamese dong (27.94 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange, a decrease of 18.13 percent in volume and 14. 04 percent in value against the previous trading session.

JAKARTA- -- Indonesian shares closed higher by 4.71 points, or 0.09 percent, to a level of 5,211.83 on Thursday.

Some 270,497 transactions were booked, involving 8.22 billion shares worth 6.74 trillion rupiah (about 529.26 million U.S. dollars).

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended higher here on Thursday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,728.06 up 18. 88 points or 1.09 percent, and the Emas was at 11,853.29 up 119.01 points or 1.00 percent.

Turnover declined to 1.60 billion shares valued at 1.84 billion ringgit Malaysia (515.70 million U.S. dollars), compared with 1.61 billion shares valued at 2.04 billion ringgit Malaysia (569.51 million dollars) on Wednesday.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks finished higher on Thursday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) up 46.75 points, or 1.42 percent, to close at 3,345.11.

A total of 1.41 billion shares changed hands with turnover of 1. 15 billion Singapore dollars (865 million U.S. dollars).

MUMBAI -- Indian stocks surged over 365 points Thursday with all the sectors rallying at the stock market following a dramatic plunge earlier this week.

The BSE benchmark index Sensex closed at 27,274.71, 365.89 points or 1.36 percent up from the previous close of 26, 908.82 points.

BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index Thursday moved up 20.87 points, or 1.39 percent to close at 1,521.62 points.
