U.S. condemns "horrific" bus attack in Kenya

The United States condemns "in the strongest terms" a "horrific" attack against innocent civilians traveling aboard a bus in Kenya, the White House said on Saturday.

Militants attacked a public passenger bus in Mandera in northern Kenya early Saturday, killing 28 people and injured several others.

The United States extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the 28 individuals killed, Bernadette Meehan, spokesperson for White House's National Security Council, said in a statement.

Somali Al-Shabaab militants have claimed responsibility for the attack, saying that it was carried out in response to the killings and arrests of Muslims in the Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa.

"The United States stands with our Kenyan partners in the effort to counter the threat of terrorism and affirms our ongoing commitment to working with all Kenyans to combat these atrocities, " Meehan said. Endite
