Sony still sees China vital

China is still one of the top-three strategic regional markets for Sony Corp after the US and Japan despite the company cutting expenditure in the domestic smartphone market, the Japanese multinational said yesterday.
Sony will continue exploring opportunities in China in sectors like flat panel TV, game console, camera and high-end audio products, Sony China said.
The Japanese giant will expand in China with other products like 4K TV, high-end cameras, portable audio players and headphones. It will also sell the PlayStation 4 gaming console on China’s mainland in as early as December.
“Sony Mobile’s decision won’t affect Sony China’s long-term strategy to make the China market an important business and profit engine,” Sony China said in a statement at the weekend. “We will strengthen business in China covering design and development, marketing and services.”
Kenichiro Yoshida, Sony’s chief financial officer, revealed the company’s plan on Friday to cut spending in China’s smartphone market and cease the development and sale of handsets made specifically for the Chinese market because of falling sales of Sony’s phones.
