President of the China Beijing Environment Exchange Mei Dewen listed several obstacles faced by the pilot carbon emission trading system. “We need supporting policies thatencourage firms to participate in this emerging market. An effective market should reflect the scarcity of resources through price signals, however, carbon prices are distorted by many irrelevant factors,” he explained.
Mei suggested that China should adopt multiple financing methods to cultivate a carbon pricing system, which will provide practical experience to the international community.
