The first British patient contracting Ebola during the outbreak of the deadly virus in West Africa has been discharged from hospital after making a full recovery, the BBC reported on Wednesday.

William Pooley, 29, has been treated in a special isolation unit at the Royal Free Hospital in north London.

Pooley was given the experimental drug ZMapp and his family have praised the "world class" care at the hospital. Pooley contracted the virus working as a volunteer nurse in one of the worst affected countries, Sierra Leone.

He was flown back to Britain by the RAF on Aug. 24.

The latest official number of Ebola cases in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone stands at 3,069, with more than 1,552 deaths, making this the largest Ebola outbreak ever recorded, according to the World Health Organization.
